Frequently Asked Questions:

Question: How can I contact Mr. Moadel?

Answer: The best way to contact me is by e-mail: david.moadel@browardschools.com . I check my e-mail regularly and will be glad to respond to your questions and comments.

Question: How much homework can my child expect in fifth grade?

Answer: It will be different for each student, because each student will work at a different pace. In fifth grade there are projects to be completed, which require the student to work independently over a period of time. So, a student may have more or less homework on any given night, depending on how he or she is progressing. Because students are often working on projects, studying for tests, and reading books for book reports, I do not believe in overloading students with excessive amounts of additional homework. Please do not hesitate to let me know if your student is having difficulty or is spending a very large amount of time on homework, so that we can address the situation.

Question: Should I help my child with homework?

Answer: Taking an active interest in a student's school work is always encouraged. I believe that students in fifth grade should be encouraged to acquire independence in homework and study skills whenever possible. This would mean showing students how to arrive at solutions to problems on their own, rather than simply giving them answers. Exactly how much help a student should receive depends on that student's individual needs.

Question: What kinds of preparation will my child undergo for the FCAT?

Answer: All fifth grade students will work through the district-approved curriculum with integration in the area of test-taking. We will not only practice the skills to be tested in all content areas, but we will also practice test-taking methods so that students understand how to read test questions and respond appropriately.

Question: Can you recommend any books or novels for 5th grade students to read?

Answer: Yes, click here for a list of books recommended for 5th grade.

Question: My child wants to do some research on the internet. What are some good web pages for research?

Answer: I recommend Google.com, Ask.com, and Dogpile.com for internet research. For more help with internet research, try our internet research help page. Also, you can click here for answers to questions that students often ask me.
